This ongoing body of work consisting of panels, pieces of paper and walls that have been produced and/or altered so that light reflects upwards from horizontal shelves that have been surfaced with a reflective material. The resulting “fingers of light” are meant to evoke horizons and other aspects of the landscape, such as cloud strata or the crests of ocean waves. The idea is inspired and informed by the history of trompe l’oeil painting, in general, and 2nd-century B.C. Roman wall painting in particular. Each piece is meant to function in the space between sculpture and painting and invite the viewer to actively see. Ultimately, these pieces explore light as a material and play with the tension between representational space and physical space. |
